Hello, Old Friend
If Squarespace (the new platform) let me include a subtitle with this post like Substack does, I’d probably have said, “Happy New Year!” If they allowed footnotes, I’d have put the following there: Several lifetimes ago, my brother and I had a contest to see who could say (with a straight face),“Happy New Year!” to someone later in the year, and I believe I won by saying it to a SDNY bankruptcy court clerk who left for maternity leave in late 2008 and came back to work in April of 2009, the year in question. But because subtitles don’t appear to be an option here, I’ll just say it’s nice to say, “Hello!” again!
If you’re getting this post via email, you once were subscribed to TND. It’s possible that you had cancelled somewhere along the way, likely due to the sheer volume of emails, which I get — my intention had been to post so often as to render every and any individual post entirely skippable, though I suppose we contradicted ourselves by having multiple-post series (I think our longest was the “Nappin’ Ain’t Easy” series, which remains a source of pride to this day…it’s a little dusty in here). In any case, I’ll ask that you read the post below — after that, please feel free to unsubscribe (the button is in the bottom left of this email).
OK. So you may have noticed that TND had been slowing down, even before we left Substack. I think October 7th had something to do with it, as did my increasingly busy schedule, which had begun to include some freelance writing. Whatever the reason, we’re back, whatever that means. To start, let me catch you up.
Things have been good all around. I’ve been doing some freelance writing and music stuff, which has been freaking amazing! Evan published a book of poetry and has raised a lot of money for a good cause! To the best of my knowledge, Henrietta hasn’t published anything, but I know he’s been writing a lot of strongly-worded emails, and I’m hopeful that he’ll include every email he’s ever sent in Appendix I to his memoirs, as every email is strongly-worded because I mean how else is Hen going to word an email?
So what can you expect from us going forward? Well, Dude, we just don’t know. The three of us have been talking about it, and all I can say at this point is that I’m pretty sure we won’t post anywhere near six days a week, nor will we limit our posts to 250 words per post. I could envision us going outside napping and including some updates on our writing outside of TND, as well as other thoughts about things, though many of them most likely will be nap-related. We’d LOVE your feedback, whether via comments or email.
Either way, thanks for reading, and keep an eye out for more from your friends at TND!
